Carpet fibers are able to absorb a large amount of water, so a long period of drying the carpet is detrimental to the product and the user. An acceptable way may be to use a washing vacuum cleaner. Chlorine-free formulations, dedicated cleaners or baking soda can be used topically to remove stains. If water will be used, a minimal amount, so as not to soak the carpet.
